Famous Welsh Scientists

Wales has quietly produced some of the finest minds in science, even if the spotlight rarely finds them the way it does actors or musicians. Cardiff-born physicist Brian Josephson won the 1973 Nobel Prize for his discovery of the Josephson effect, still fundamental to quantum computing today. Broadcaster and anatomist Alice Roberts trained in medicine in Wales and worked in the NHS in South Wales before becoming one of Britain's best-known science presenters. Our list of Welsh scientists also includes mathematician Robert Recorde credited with inventing the equals sign alongside Alan Cox, Dr Evan Pierce, Herbert Stuart and John Ddu.
