Inigo Owen Jones

Meteorologist and founder of Crohamhurst Observatory, Queensland

Inigo Owen Jones was a meteorologist and farmer, best known as the founder of the Crohamhurst Observatory in south-east Queensland, Australia, and for his long-term weather forecasts.

He was born on the 1st of December, 1872, in Croydon, Surrey, England, the son of Owen Jones, a civil engineer, and Emilie Susanne, née Bernoulli. In 1874 his parents emigrated to Australia, settling on a property named Crohamhurst in the Glass House Mountains north of Brisbane, Queensland, where Jones grew up on the family farm and became interested in meteorology. The Queensland Government meteorologist Clement Wragge recruited him as an assistant in 1888, and Jones went on to become a full-time forecaster and lecturer from 1927.

His family long claimed descent from the celebrated Welsh-born architect Inigo Jones, and his father's name, Owen Jones, has a Welsh ring to it — but neither claim has been independently verified. Genealogical research on the architect Inigo Jones has found no evidence he ever married or had descendants, so this site records the Welsh connection honestly as a family tradition rather than an established fact.

Queensland long-range weather forecaster with a family tradition of Welsh descent.

Jones founded the privately operated Crohamhurst Observatory and became known across Australia for his long-term weather forecasts, a discipline he said he inherited an aptitude for through his mother's side, the Bernoulli family of mathematicians.
