For many years this entry listed Garfield Morgan among Wales's famous names, but the original record itself carried an unanswered editorial note asking where in Wales he was born. Research confirms he was not Welsh: Thomas Timothy Garfield Morgan was born on 19 April 1931 in Birmingham, England, and grew up in the city's Erdington area, where he began acting with a youth club drama group. No verified Welsh birthplace, upbringing or family background has been found for him, and his obituaries describe him as an English actor. We correct the record here rather than remove him quietly.
Morgan trained for the stage after an apprenticeship as a dental mechanic, starting his acting career with the Arena Theatre in Birmingham. He went on to become Director of Productions at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury (1957-1958) and at Manchester's Library Theatre (1959-1960), later serving as associate director at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter, and at Nottingham Playhouse.
He is best remembered for playing Detective Chief Inspector Frank Haskins, boss to Jack Regan, in the Thames Television crime series 'The Sweeney' (1975-1978), having earlier played Detective Chief Inspector Gwyn Lewis in the first series of 'Softly, Softly'. Morgan made hundreds of television appearances across a long career, including roles in 'The Avengers', 'Minder', 'Z-Cars', 'Dixon of Dock Green' and 'Dr Finlay's Casebook'. His film work included 'The Odessa File' (1974) and, in one of his final roles, '28 Weeks Later' (2007).
Morgan married actress Dilys Laye in 1963; the marriage was later dissolved. He died of cancer on 5 December 2009 in London, aged 78.
