Bernard Lloyd was a Welsh actor, born on 30 January 1934 in Newport. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and went on to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company, building a long career on stage and in British television drama. He worked professionally under the name Lloyd rather than his birth surname, Gibbons, to avoid confusion with another actor of the same name.
Lloyd's television career began with "Redcap" in 1965, and over the following decades he built a substantial list of screen credits. He played the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt in the 1975 drama "The Love School", and appeared as the mysterious Traveller opposite Denholm Elliott in the 1976 BBC "Ghost Story for Christmas" adaptation "The Signalman".
His later television work included recurring and guest roles in some of Britain's best-loved detective dramas: "Inspector Morse", "Agatha Christie's Poirot", "Midsomer Murders" and "Lewis". He also appeared in "Casualty" over more than a decade, played Jacob Marley's ghost in the 1999 television adaptation of "A Christmas Carol", and took the role of the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 2009 feature film "The Young Victoria".
Bernard Lloyd died on 12 December 2018, aged 84.
