Stewart Jones

Welsh speaking actor

Stewart Jones (1927 – 26 July 2011), sometimes credited as Stuart Jones, was a Welsh-language stage and screen actor closely associated with the Llŷn Peninsula town of Cricieth in Gwynedd, north-west Wales.

He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1927, but built his acting career in Wales, becoming one of the best-known faces of Welsh-language theatre in the region. He is most remembered for originating the comic character Ifas y Tryc, written for him by the Cricieth-based playwright William Samuel Jones, known as Wil Sam, whose plays were staged at the town's Theatr y Gegin from the 1960s onward.

His best-known screen role came late in his career: in the film Oed yr Addewid (Do Not Go Gentle, 2000), he played William Davies, an elderly retired quarryman confronting a government he felt had forgotten him. The performance won him the BAFTA Cymru award for Best Actor in 2002. He also appeared in the film Hawkmoor (1978) and the television production Ghosts (2006).

Welsh-language BAFTA winning stage and screen actor, best known for originating Wil Sam's character Ifas y Tryc

One reader recollection on this page (retained below) states that Jones was born in Scotland of Scottish parents but was adopted as a baby by a Welsh couple - a detail that would explain his lifelong association with Wales, though it has not been independently verified against a published biography.

Although born in Scotland, he lived and worked in Wales for decades, becoming a leading figure of Welsh-language theatre based around Cricieth, Gwynedd, and Theatr y Gegin.
