Dai Shell

Lead guitarist with Sassafras

David "Dai" Shell grew up in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, where his musical journey began in the 1960s with local band Chapter 5, before he moved to Cardiff and built a reputation as one of the town's most admired guitarists. A 2017 oral-history project on Merthyr's popular music scene, run through Merthyr Town Hall, gathered his own recollections of those early years and the musicians who influenced him.

In 1970 Shell joined Sassafras, a South Wales rock band already featuring guitarist Ralph Evans, bassist Ricky John Holt and drummer Rob Reynolds. The twin-lead guitar interplay between Shell and Evans became the band's signature sound, described by the BBC as giving Sassafras "a real roadtrip rock feel" reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles. The band signed to George Martin's AIR Productions in 1972 and released their debut album, Expecting Company, on Polydor the following year.

Sassafras went on to tour major American venues alongside acts including Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After and Peter Frampton, and at one point held the UK record for the most live gigs played by a band in a single year. Shell has been named among Wales's best guitarists by the BBC, and continued performing with Sassafras into the 2020s.
