Maldwyn Pope was born in Brynhyfryd, Swansea, on 18 May 1960, into a family of teachers. He started learning the guitar at seven and was writing songs almost straight away. While still a schoolboy he sent a tape to John Peel, which led to sessions at the BBC and a recording contract with The Rocket Record Company, Elton John's label.
He has recorded many albums and toured as a support act to Elton John, Art Garfunkel and others. In 1982 he joined BBC Radio Wales as a researcher and became one of Wales's best-known broadcasters. He also sang the theme tune to the children's series Fireman Sam.
