Tom Cruise

Actor, Producer

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on 3 July 1962 in Syracuse, New York, USA. Since the early 1980s he has been one of Hollywood's most consistently bankable leading men, with an acting career spanning Risky Business (1983), Top Gun (1986), Rain Man (1988), A Few Good Men (1992), Jerry Maguire (1996), Minority Report (2002), The Last Samurai (2003), Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022), alongside the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, which he also produces.

Cruise's claimed Welsh connection rests on family history rather than any confirmed personal link to Wales: some genealogical accounts state that his great-great-grandfather, a man named Dillon (or Dylan) Henry Mapother, emigrated from Flint in North Wales to Louisville, Kentucky, in the nineteenth century. Other genealogists dispute this, identifying the same ancestor as Irish rather than Welsh. No primary-source record confirming a Flint birthplace has been independently verified, so this should be read as a family legend rather than an established fact. Cruise himself was born and raised in the United States and has no known personal residence or upbringing in Wales.

His Welsh connection was found by researchers on a Bravo TV show in New York called 'The Actors Studio' where an invited audience of drama students hear first hand what makes world class actors like Tom so successful. James Lipton, the host makes a point of revealing what he considers important background information. In Tom's case Lipton thought it important enough to not only include the fact that Tom's family come from Flint but even went on to present him with a copy of the family court of arms.
