Noah Strausser Speer Wyle was born on 4 June 1971 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. He is an American actor, director and producer best known for playing Dr. John Carter in the long-running NBC medical drama "ER" (1994-2005), a role that made him one of the most recognisable faces on American television.
Wyle went on to headline the "Librarian" television film franchise as Flynn Carsen, and later the "Librarians" series, taking on writing and directing duties as well as acting. He also starred as Tom Mason in the science-fiction series "Falling Skies" (2011-2015), and returned to medical drama with a lead role in "The Pitt" from 2025.
The claim that Wyle is "of Welsh descent" has circulated for many years, but it is worth being precise about what is actually documented. Wyle's father's family was Jewish, with roots traced back to Germany. On his mother's side, genealogical research has traced a broad and mixed European ancestry including English, Irish, Scottish, Scots-Irish, Dutch and French lines, with only a distant thread of Welsh ancestry within that mix. In other words, any Welsh connection is real but minor and not well documented, rather than a defining part of his heritage.
