Artro Morris, born Timothy James Artro-Morris on 17 May 1926, was a character actor whose family came from Llanbedr, near Harlech in Gwynedd, North Wales (his unusual first name was taken from the River Artro, which flows into Cardigan Bay south of Harlech). He was born in Liverpool, but his roots and, in later life, his home remained tied to Gwynedd, and he died in Wales on 11 February 2014, being cremated at Bangor (Gwynedd) Crematorium.
Morris began his career in repertory theatre in the mid-1950s and went on to build a long list of television and film credits through the 1960s, 70s and beyond. He appeared in "The Avengers", "The Onedin Line", "The Liver Birds", "Citizen Smith" and "Minder", and had a recurring role as Preston Bill (P.B.), also known as William Hadderwick, in the early years of "Emmerdale Farm" between 1974 and 1975.
On the big screen, Morris appeared in "The 39 Steps" and "Return to Treasure Island", and took a notable supporting role as John Goronwy Jones opposite Katharine Hepburn in George Cukor's 1979 television film "The Corn Is Green", a story set in a Welsh mining valley. Reviewers of the production singled him out as one of the standout performances alongside Hepburn.
Over a career spanning several decades, Artro Morris built up around fifty acting credits, working steadily as a familiar and dependable character actor on British television.
