Huw Garmon was born in 1966 in Llangefni, Anglesey, the youngest of four sons of the Welsh historian and novelist Richard Cyril Hughes. He studied drama at Aberystwyth University before going on to a career spanning Welsh-language and English-language film and television.

The film became the first Welsh-language production to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

He was a regular in the S4C soap opera Pobol y Cwm between 1997 and 2004, playing Steffan Humphries, and later worked as a scriptwriter on the series. In 2016 he joined the cast of the S4C soap Rownd a Rownd.

In 2010 Garmon took up an academic post at Glyndwr University, lecturing on theatre and television performance while continuing to work as an actor. He is married with three children.
