Paul Durden was a Swansea writer best known as the co-writer, alongside director Kevin Allen, of the 1997 black comedy film “Twin Town” — one of the most commercially successful Welsh films ever made. Durden had lived in Swansea for most of his life, and his deep knowledge of the city and its characters helped shape the film's dark, distinctly Swansea sense of humour.
Although chiefly known as a writer, Durden also appeared briefly on screen in “Twin Town” itself, playing a rude taxi driver. Director Kevin Allen has described Durden as a great sounding board during the film's development, valued for his anecdotal knowledge of the city and its people.
Durden was from Swansea. He died suddenly in September 2022, at the age of 73, having lived in the city's Uplands area. News of his death prompted tributes from across the Swansea arts and writing community, reflecting the affection in which the co-writer of “Twin Town” was held.
“Twin Town” also starred fellow Welsh actors Rhys Ifans and Llyr Evans, and has retained a cult following in Wales and beyond since its release.
