Alan David (born 29 December 1941) is a Welsh actor, born and brought up in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. After training and working in repertory theatre at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, he went on to build a long career on the British stage and screen.
David became a regular member of the Royal Shakespeare Company between 1970 and 2003, appearing in productions including As You Like It (1977), in which he played Touchstone, the 1986 revival of Nicholas Nickleby, The Prisoner's Dilemma, and Hamlet (2001), in which he played Polonius. He also appeared regularly at the National Theatre, the Almeida Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre in London.
On television, David's many credits include Coronation Street (1973), The Sweeney (1975), Making Out (1989-1991), Inspector Morse (1993) and the Doctor Who episode "The Unquiet Dead" (2005). His film work includes a role as a Welsh teacher in The Man Who Cried (2000), alongside Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett.
