Was a member of the Glamorgan Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales in which he played viola. Gained his initial music degree at Cardiff University.

As a member of both the above orchestras my recollection is that he played the oboe.

He's my father's second cousin and is the president of the village brass band. I think he was in another band called 'Nucleus' before 'Soft Machine'.
