'Davies of Llandinam, He had this little engine And according to its power It did thirty miles per hour'. Learned in school, Y Drenewydd, Canol Cymru - subject: famous local people. David Davies was a self-made man whose fortune was derived from contracting, coal-owning, railways and the docks. The above ditty is still recited to children by people of the area. Grand daughters Gwendoline Davies (1882-1951) and Margaret Davies (1884-1963), two spinster sisters from mid-Wales amassed one of the great British art collections of the twentieth century.
