Illtyd Harrington, notable with a connection to Wales (Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil)
Illtyd Harrington
Chairman of Greater London Council in 1980's.Connection: Born in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil.

Illtyd sometimes brought deprived East End children down to Wiltshire for a day out on the Kennet and Avon Canal and a boat trip on the Paddle boat 'Charlotte Dundas'.

I was in school with Illtyd. A gentle giant then.

He was my English teacher at Daneford School in Bethnal Green, during the mid 1960's. Compared to the other teachers, he was a flamboyant man, with a booming, theatrical voice, and wit to match.
He disciplined me once - for running out on him during a visit to the West End of London. He told me later he scoured the streets "all bloody night".
From then on he called me Tyler-after Wat Tyler- because I was "a peasant". Nice! Even then, I never disliked him. He was a fabulous teacher.
