Merlin, Arthur's druid advisor
Legendary magician, prophet and advisor to King Arthur. In all the Arthurian legends there is a lot of scope for scepticism yet enough to hint at real people or events. For Merlin however nearly everything we know is likely to have been introduced much later than the core legendary character. In other words, even if we found super accurate dna evidence and a birth certificate for Arthur, Merlin would probably remain myth.
Connection: Believed Born in Caerfyrddin, Wales. Certainly Welsh-speaking Celt. The popular Welsh name 'Mervin or Mervyn' are derivatives of his Merlin.
Throughout history there are many accounts of leaders with an extraordinary advisor, for example Elizabeth I had John Dee. So the principal and role is well established. In Merlin's case there's an element of Druidic lore and what would later be described as alchemy.
Foretold of a battle between the white and red dragons in which the red dragon is defeated. - (That always gives me the creeps, however, he also said the red dragon would eventually overcome and rule the white dragon which makes me feel a little better - Ed)
