Dyfrig Jones
Space plasma physicist
Dyfrig Jones (1940–1989) was a Welsh physicist who became a leading figure in space plasma physics at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge, where he rose to head the Space Plasma Physics Group.
He was born on the 16th of August, 1940, in Crwbin, Carmarthenshire, and was educated at Cardigan Grammar School before going on to study physics at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He completed a PhD there in 1964 in experimental physics, working on the interpretation of ionospheric drift data and developing new methods for radio signal processing, correlation and spectral analysis — skills that underpinned his later career in space science.
A contributor to the original site entry, writing partly in Welsh, also recalled that he went on to study at St John's College, Cambridge, and to work at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands before joining the British Antarctic Survey; this detail has not been independently verified in this update but is preserved below as originally submitted.
At BAS, Jones's research focused on the physics of the near-Earth space environment and the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere, work that contributed to the wider understanding of planetary radio and radiation phenomena. He died on the 6th of August, 1989.
