Pete Morgan grew up on Newland Street in Barry, South Wales, and attended Barry Grammar School, where he learned to play the double bass. After leaving school he trained and worked as a boilermaker by day, while performing as a bass player and vocalist in local pubs and clubs by night. In 1963, determined to make a career in music, he quit his job and moved to London with his wife Jean, also from Barry, joining the resident band at the Mayfair Hotel.
