Cerys Jones
Violinist
Cerys Jones is a violinist from Rhiwbina, Cardiff, who began playing at the age of eight and went on to become one of Wales's most accomplished orchestral and chamber musicians. In 1996 she won a full scholarship to the Junior Department of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying under Barry Haskey, before leading the Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Youth Orchestra and appearing as a soloist with the BBC National Chamber Orchestra of Wales in 2003, performing Bach's Concerto for Violin in E major.
Cerys moved to London in 1999 to study at the Royal College of Music with Rodney Friend, Michaela Comberti and Adrian Butterfield, graduating with a BMus (Hons) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Solo and Ensemble Performance with distinction. She later trained further at the Juilliard School in New York, building a career that has taken her to Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw and the Berlin Konzerthaus as a member of the acclaimed Heath Quartet, winners of the RPS Young Artist Award.
Today Cerys performs as a Section Principal with leading UK orchestras including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Welsh National Opera, and is a Guest Principal with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also a member of the Sinfonia of London, whose Korngold recording was named BBC Music Magazine's Album of the Year in 2020, and she teaches the next generation of players at both the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
