Dr Haydn James is a conductor and arranger whose career has been built around Welsh choral music, even though the record does not confirm he was born in Wales; his connection is one of decades of dedicated leadership of Welsh institutions rather than birthplace or ancestry. After twelve years conducting The Dylan Singers, he became Musical Director of the London Welsh Male Voice Choir in 1979, a post he held for thirty years until 2010, taking the choir to major concert halls across the UK and on tours spanning Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and the Falklands.
For five years alongside his London Welsh commitments, James also travelled to Wales to direct the South Wales Male Choir, at the time one of the largest choirs in the Principality. His reputation as a conductor capable of marshalling large-scale massed voices led to a long-running role as Musical Director for the Welsh Rugby Union, in which capacity he has led the singing of the Welsh national anthem and massed choirs at more than 160 international matches at Cardiff's Principality Stadium since it opened in 1999.
James has conducted massed choirs of up to 1,800 voices at events including the Rugby World Cup, FA Cup finals at Wembley, and Lions tours to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa with the British and Irish Lions Choir. He has also conducted the '1000 Voices' male choir festival at the Royal Albert Hall on nine occasions, making him one of the most prolific conductors of Welsh massed singing of his generation, even as his own birthplace remains undocumented in public sources.
