Jonny Buckland

Guitarist, Coldplay

Jonathan Mark Buckland was born on 11 September 1977 in Islington, London — not, as sometimes claimed, in Wales itself. However, when he was four years old his family moved to Pantymwyn, a village in Flintshire, North Wales, and it was there that he grew up. He was educated at Ysgol y Waun in nearby Gwernaffield, where he first picked up a guitar, and later at Alun School in Mold, where he took A-level music and was remembered by a former teacher as showing a particular talent for composition.

Buckland went on to study mathematics and astronomy at University College London, where in 1996 he met fellow student Chris Martin. The pair began writing songs together, were joined by Guy Berryman and Will Champion, and by 1998 had formed Coldplay. As lead guitarist and co-founder, Buckland has been part of a band that has sold more than 160 million records worldwide, won seven Grammy Awards and nine Brit Awards, and become one of the best-known rock acts of the 21st century.

Despite his global career, Buckland has kept close ties to North Wales: in 2012 he donated a gold Coldplay disc to help fund the restoration of Pantymwyn village hall, and in 2019 the band previewed new album tracks in his old local paper, the Daily Post, where he once had a holiday job. He remains known within Coldplay as its quiet, understated guitar hero, noted for sparse, atmospheric playing rather than flashy solos.
