Alexander Paul Coe, known throughout dance music simply as Sasha, was born in Bangor on 4 September 1969 and grew up in North Wales. After leaving Epsom College before finishing his A-levels he moved back to Bangor to live with his father and stepmother, who insisted he take piano lessons, something he later credited with helping his music career.
In 1988 he discovered house music at The Hacienda in Manchester, and within a few years he was one of the most sought-after DJs in Britain. From 1993 he formed a long partnership with John Digweed, and that year he released his first single under his own name, Together. His mix albums for the Global Underground series, including San Francisco in 1998, helped make the DJ mix a best-selling format.
