Sir George Everest was Surveyor General of India on behalf of the British Empire. His job entailed making maps of the area and therefore he was the first imperial authority to officially report on the existence of the mountain. He was a Welshman and the mountain is named after him. Although the Tibetans and the Nepalese both have their own, traditional, names for it.

Sir George Everest did not even lay his eyes upon the peak: the peak was named after him because of his pioneering efforts at improving Trigonometric equipment.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, he was born in Gwerndale, Brecknockshire.

Powys-born surveyor-general of India after whom the highest mountain in the world was named. 'an illustrious master of geographical research'. The first Welshman to climb mount Everest was also from Mid Wales, Caradog Jones. If you know more about this intrepid climber from Tregaron please post to this site.
