On the 12th September 2002 Warren announced that he had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.

Sadly, in September 2003 Warren died of lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles. He was 56. His illness had been announced in August the previous year but his death still came as a shock to fans all over the world. Warren's tributes included many from the huge stars of the rock world, those artists he'd worked with and influenced such as Bob Dylan and Neil Young.
