1822 - 1899. Born Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth. Non-conformist minister, established a society (the Brython Association) to help Welsh folk emigrate. His life's mission was to establish a Welsh-speaking colony free from English-language oppression. "Y Wladfa" in Patagonia enabled Argentina to prevent Chile from claiming large areas of uninhabited land, it had its own Welsh constitution and gave women the vote, the first democracy to do so anywhere.
