Imposing Conway Castle, the gateway to Snowdonia.

Conway Castle is one of the most impressive medieval buildings in the United Kingdom, some would justly say in the world since
its position, overlooking the Conway Estuary belittles everyone who stands before it. Built by King Edward 1st (Long shanks)
this was more than a military garrison, this was a symbol of his determination to stamp his authority on Wales. A factor nearly
all the Edwardian castles have in common.
Edward was a complex, untrustworthy and disliked character. He once ordered a his body guards to remove the right eye and
ear of a man who happened to pass him by for no apparent reason! England had as much to fear from him as Wales and Scotland.
As a military commander there is no doubt, Edward knew what he was doing. The building of Conway Castle meant he could control
the estuary which was of great strategic importance. There’s lots of information on the castles of Wales available online,
