Ron Burgess, sportsman with a connection to Wales (Cwm, Ebbw Vale, Gwent)
Ron Burgess
Football (Soccer) player for Tottenham Hotspur. Was captain and club manager.Connection: He was Born in Cwm, Ebbw Vale, Gwent.

He also played for the RAF during the war alongside Sir Stanley Matthews and other famous names. I have programmes from some of these wartime games.

Ron was probably the greatest ever Welsh soccer player. As a Spurs supporter since WW2. I can tell you he was definitely the greatest ever Spurs player since the war. Better than Mackay, Blanchflower, Greaves, Ramsey, Jones, Hoddle, Gazza etc.

Ron was a great player in the top ten of Welsh football greats. Sadly he has just passed away at his Swansea home aged eighty-six, early 2005.

Until recently I hadn't heard the name Ron Burgess, then I started doing some family research! According to my Dad, Ron was his mothers cousin. This seems to make sense as my gran was born in Cwm and her mothers maiden name was Burgess.

I have recently been sorting through photographs from my grandmother and came across a signed photograph of Ron Burgess. On the back there is a comment with says "My uncle Ron Burgess the footballer". I would be grateful if anyone has any information regarding this welsh legend so I can trace the links to my family.

Ron was my uncle and first cousin to my Dad Stan Burgess. My Dad was a schoolboy international and capped for Wales. I have his cap and photograph. He was also spotted by the Arsenal coach and went there for some time but was not happy away from the valleys. I remember uncle Ron coming home to see his mam and dad when I was groing up. I have programmes from when he played for the RAF with Sir Stanley, Eddie Ditchburn etc. I will be happy to help with any background history i can.

Looks like I have some family out there that I don't know about. The Burgess name is quite well known in the Cwm area there were quite a few brothers and sisters. My sister still lives in Abertillery.
