Seaman David Rice, Welsh pirate of the Caribbean and African West Coast

David Rice, Welsh pirate sold to slavery.

Taken out of the Cornwall galley by Captain Bartholomew Roberts, he served onboard the famous "Royal Fortune".

When pirates 'took' a ship they would often look for new crew-mates amongst the captured party. If they were in need of a particular skill such as a carpenter or even surgeon they would abduct those that would not join willingly.

Davis Rice, a known Welshman of Bristol was tried and found guilty of piracy and condemned to share the fate of the other fifty-two members of Black Bart's crew sentenced to death. However, along with six others he was appealed the sentence claiming he'd been induced to piracy under threat and would be willing to sign his freedom away and work as a slave for a time to prove his honesty. He was reprieved and sold to the Royal African Company to serve for seven years in their plantations.

He was never head of again!

connection: Was known to be a Welshman.
