Captain (Dafydd) Morgan, a seemingly successful Welsh pirate. This Captain Morgan should not be confused with the buccaneer, Sir Henry Morgan, govenor of Jamacia. Little is known about him except that he was with Captain Hamlin, the French pirate, in May of 1683, off the coast of West Africa, and helped to take several Danish and English ships. Prowling the Atlantic with their ship disguised as an English man-of-war. Off the coast of Sierra Leone, he took seventeen Dutch and English ships, returning to Dominica in July, 1683, finally reaching the friendly St. Thomas Island, being warmly welcomed back by the pirate Governor. Three days afterwards, H.M.S. Francis arrived on the lookout for pirates and attacked and burnt Hamlin's ship. With the help of the Governor, Hamlin managed to escape and re-group. Hamlin's crew were a mixture of nationalities, mostly British and French, Soon after the re-grouping the pirates quarrelled
over the division of their plunder and separated into two companies, the English following Captain Morgan in one of the prizes.
