Jerry Davies

Inspired by his uncle (a Scot from Tiree) who started a practice in Pembrokshire, Jerry has set the bar high, a terrific example to all.

Elected member of RCVS Council and the Chairmanship of the Preliminary Investigation Committee. Jerry is also a member of the BVA/KC HD and ED panels. He was awarded the BSAVA Simon Award for contributions to Small Animal Surgery in 2004.

He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1974. He then spent two years in the Department of Surgery as a House Surgeon. After a brief spell in general practice he returned to the RVC gaining a PhD (equine gastrointestinal disease) and a Diploma in Veterinary Radiology. He held the posts of Lecturer in Veterinary Radiology and then Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Surgery.

The first small animal referral clinic in the UK
His clinical interests and responsibilities spanned radiology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery in small and large animals. During this time a visit to a private multidiscipline referral clinic in Dallas sowed the seed for a similar facility in the UK. On leaving the RVC in 1989 Jerry established possibly the first small animal referral clinic in the UK. This idea evolved through the ’90s culminating in the opening of a new referral hospital in 1998.

The initial nucleus of the practice was developed with the help of his wife Olivia, then Company Secretary. Services including surgical and imaging referrals, X-ray film reporting, Radiation Protection Advice and CPD provision. These have been added to over the years, they now offer everything from Neurology to Orthopaedics. You can view the official Davies Veterinary Specialists website here.

Although Jerry is now settled in England he still considers himself a passionate Welshman. He says "Especially when we are winning the rugby! There is exclusivity in being part of anything small and select." A sentiment many expats will agree with. Jerry feels we should "Continue to promote a tightly knit nation proud of its roots and its traditions, fervent about ruby and singing and a beautiful place to live and visit with the interest of a historic national language."

We asked Jerry if there was a time when he felt particlarly proud of Wales, "The Six Nations 2005 of course. As a rugby playing young man of the ‘70s Golden Era I have been waiting a long time for this. It is also great to see two Jones boys giving the Aussies grief on the cricket field despite being under the inaccurate banner of England – more correctly The England and Wales Cricket Board."

Jerry is completly dedicated to his hospital but always puts his family first. His recipe for success is "A very supportive wife, a very happy family and a great bunch of colleagues in the practice." And for anyone wishing to follow his example Jerry says "Stick at it even when things get rough and always be straightforward and honest."
