Gwynfor Evans
Having spent his early years in Liverpool he learnt Welsh fluently. Former president of Plaid Cymru he was the first Plaid Cymru MP, winning Carmarthen Constituency from Labour in the famous by election on 14th July 1966 , following the death of Lady Megan Lloyd George. He threatened to fast until death to secure a Welsh language TV channel, resulting in the establishment of S4C. He also campaigned tirelessly for improved road networks between Wales and remainder of the UK, the main outcome of which was the construction of the M4 motorway through South Wales and a dual carriageway extending to West Wales. He was often referred to as 'Gwynfor Dual-Carriageway' due to his extended campaign.
Son of well known Welsh businessman Dan Evans, Gwynfor Evans qualified as a barrister and became President of Plaid Cymru, The Party of Wales.

Regarded by many as the most influential figure in contemporary Welsh society, Gwynfor Evans recalls his lifelong struggle for Welsh political freedom. Gwynfor Evans transformed Plaid Cymru from an intellectual pressure group to a successful political party and became the first Welsh Nationalist MP when he dramatically won the Carmarthen by-election in 1966.
