Griffith Jones
Founder of the "Circulating Schools", Griffith Jones has been credited with making Wales "the most literate nation in the world".
By Jones's death in 1761 it was estimated that 158,000 Welsh-folk of a population of 480,000 (33%) were literate and 3,500 schools had been established.
Born at Pant-yr-Efel, Penboyr, Carmarthenshire in 1683. He was the son of John ap Gruffydd and Elinor John.

David Jones
Writer, painter, calligrapher, illustrator, soldier. He Illustrated 'Gulliver's Travels' and other books.
TS Eliot described his part-poem part-novel 'In Parenthesis' as "a work of genius". WH Auden regarded his 'The Anathemata' as "... Probably the finest long poem written in English this (the 20th) century".
Although he was born in Kent, England (1895) Jones has a strong Welsh connection via his grandfather who was born in Wales and moved to Surrey, England. David Jones' Welsh heritage was fundamental to his beliefs and his life's works.

Saint Gildas
The first British historian. Wrote "Concerning the ruin and conquest of Britain", in 540, which was used extensively by Bede.
Taught by saint Illtud and known as "The second apostle of Ireland". His elder brother Hywel was said to have been killed by Arthur.
Gildas ap Caw (Son of Caw) Born c498 in Strathclyde. Feast day January 29th.

John Dee
Renowned polymath. Tutor to Elizabeth I. A noted euclidian mathematician, antiquary, astronomer, philosopher, geographer, propagandist, astrologer, linguist and spy.
Born at Cefn Pawl, Beguildy, Powys. Known as Ieuan Ddu, John Dee and Black Jack. His father Rowland Dee, from Pilleth, Radnorshire served under Henry viii. Claimed descent from Rhodri Mawr and related to the Cecils.

John Owen
Non-conformist church leader and theologian. Chaplain to Oliver Cromwell, who was also of Welsh descent. Dr Owen's most important work was his treatise on evangelical church governance. The majority of Owen's voluminous works are still in print.
John Owen was of a family of high rank and reputation in Wales. Grandson of Lewis Owen, Vice-Chamberlain and Baron of the Exchequer in North Wales, and High Sheriff of the county of Merioneth.
